What is a Coconut?

It is a large brown haired nut-shaped fruit obtained from coconut palm tree (Cocos nucifera). It is widely used for it’s milk, water and oil and is mostly grown in tropic regions around the world. It is packed with nutrition and is popular for it’s delicious flavor and culinary uses.

How to choose the best?

Coconuts are filled with coconut water inside. Try to find the one which looks heavier than its size. If you want a fresh one with more water then try shaking it and compare.

How to use it?

Its shell is very hard and one might get hurt if not handled properly. You can try softening its shell by heating it in the oven at 180 degrees C for about 15 minutes, but ensure that you have removed its brown hair.

Use a hammer or cleaver to crack it into pieces. Collect the water and carefully peel of its skin using a sharp knife to get the flesh.

The white fleshy mass inside the coconut is used in many savory dishes based on rice, curry sauces, and sweets. Coconut water can be used in preparing smoothies and shakes.

How to store it?

You can keep the chunks in water at room temperature. Make sure to change the water everyday to keep them fresh for a week or two.

If you have shredded its flesh, then you may store it in an airtight container or jar and keep it in a cool and dry place.
